Ice, weak airflow and an outdoor unit that seems stopped

Ice calls for stopping and observing, not repeated starts to try to restore cooling. A photograph taken safely helps show which part has frozen.

Do not force thawing

Do not strike the ice, apply heat or open the casing. Stop using the affected unit and allow for water as ice melts. If electrical connections are near the drip, avoid touching the area and request assistance.

Airflow and outdoor operation

Note whether airflow had weakened and whether accessible filters were dirty. An outdoor unit that appears stopped does not prove compressor failure: controls and protections also affect operation. Observe from ground level only and never try to turn a fan by hand.

Useful diagnostic information

Describe how long ice takes to appear, the operating mode and whether all units are affected. Poor air circulation and a refrigeration-circuit issue require different checks. A picture of a frozen pipe alone is not sufficient evidence of low refrigerant; ask for the cause to be established before work is proposed.

Choose the next step

Use the symptom page to understand the likely causes. If the cause is still unclear, book a diagnosis before approving a repair.
