Air conditioner smells: dampness, dirt and warning signs
Different smells need different responses. Describe when the smell appears and distinguish a damp odour from a burning smell.
At start-up or throughout operation
Note whether it disappears after a few minutes, occurs only in cooling mode and when filters were last cleaned. Air can carry smells from the room, so observe the surroundings too. An odour cannot identify a particular mould or bacterium and should not be presented as a medical diagnosis.
What the user can do
Only clean filters that the manual identifies as user-removable, with the unit off and following the manufacturer's instructions. Do not spray perfume, bleach or disinfectant into the machine. Cleaning filters does not replace inspecting internal surfaces and drainage when a smell persists.
When to stop the unit
Stop using the equipment and request inspection if you notice a burning smell or abnormal electrical signs. For persistent damp odours, ask for an assessment of the cleaning scope and condensate drainage. Mention any dripping: treating the smell alone may leave its underlying cause unresolved.

Use the symptom page to understand the likely causes. If the cause is still unclear, book a diagnosis before approving a repair.
