Ducted AC, return air and zoning: understanding distribution

A ducted installation depends both on air reaching rooms and on the route it takes back to the unit.

Supply and return

Supply grilles distribute treated air; the return allows air to circulate back through the system. Do not cover a return to hide noise or shut grilles indiscriminately to force airflow into one room. If closing a door changes performance substantially, mention it during inspection: distribution needs assessment as a whole.

Odours, noise and condensation

Describe which outlets are affected and whether the symptom occurs throughout the property. An odour may require inspecting the unit and drain as well as ducts; cleaning just one element may not solve it. If a ceiling becomes wet, stop using the affected system and report the location without opening the ceiling or touching concealed services.

Zoning and control

Zoning systems, including compatible Airzone installations, can manage separate spaces but require suitable design and adjustment. Ask how airflow is maintained when few zones request conditioning and which access panels must remain available. When comparing with multi-split, consider building work, controls and maintenance, not simply the number of visible outlets.

Choose the next step

Use the symptom page to understand the likely causes. If the cause is still unclear, book a diagnosis before approving a repair.
